We assume that the internal CC infrastructure of FCS has a hierarchical nature, having a top control unit (or topUnit) providing global CC of the whole mission, intermediate units enabling local CC on different levels, and also fringe units comprising (unmanned) sensor and re units. The top and intermediate units are interconnected by oriented links named infra, and the fringe sensor and re units are connected to the former units by oriented links named, respectively, sensor and re, as shown in Figure 8.10. The top unit may correspond, for example, to a manned infantry carrier, and the intermediate units may be both manned and unmanned units, the latter including unmanned aerial and ground vehicles (UAVs and UGVs) with automatic CC capabilities. At the lowest level, the special mobile robotic sensors and direct and indirect re robots can be used. Such an infrastructure may be highly dynamic, adjusting to the mission s evolution and changeable parameters of the hostile environment; it can be effectively built and maintained in WAVE-WP at run time, as discussed in the previous chapter. Starting from all sensor units that see the potential targets, the target data is moving upwards the hierarchy, being merged in intermediate units, as well as the top one. Upon completion of this bottom-up process, the target data collected in the top unit is sent down the hierarchy, replicating in intermediate nodes, unless reaching the re units. The latter may choose the most appropriate (or reachable in principle) targets themselves and can process them independently from each other, possibly in parallel, where the same targets may happen to be shot from different re units.
