If an application is strictly batch processing, then user navigation testing does not apply. Most software has a series of end user and administrator screens for directing the software s operation. The end user screens can be divided into two categories: navigation and transaction. Navigation screens are those log on and log off screens that control access to the software, all menus that provide alternate activity paths thru the software, and all screen-to-screen linkage that represents a continuum of some business activity. User navigation testing focuses on the user s ability to log on to the software with appropriate authority, traverse the application to the desired transaction screens, traverse the transaction screens correctly, and log off the software. This kind of testing is not concerned with what transaction activity is being performed on the transaction screens encountered, just that the screens can be encountered in the correct sequence. As the transaction screens themselves have become more complex, it takes fewer screen traversals to complete a business activity. The navigation becomes more intrascreen movement (tabbing) than interscreen movement. It is the tester s job to design and execute tests that traverse all valid navigation paths and attempt to traverse as many invalid navigation paths as possible. The valid navigation paths are found primarily in the user guide. The input/expected result paradigm of black box testing becomes path taken/expected destination paradigm.

Menu animations were first introduced by Windows 98 and expanded by Windows 2000. While this feature is turned on, menus elegantly slide into view. Trunk circuits and bit rates much higher than about 16 Mbit/s are thus the realm of point-topoint radio access network technology. Point-to-point (PTP) xed wireless access technology, as shown in Figure 14.1, can be used effectively and ef ciently to carry very high speed access lines or trunks from public telecommunications network operators to their customers. Indeed, a number of wireless access network operators (e.g. Winstar and ART) have appeared in the USA, and made successful businesses from providing such high speed network access services using high bit rate PTP technology. Modern shorthaul PTP technology is able to support bit rates typically ranging from 262 Mbit/s (European hierarchy) or 261.5 Mbit/s (north American hierarchy) up to 155 Mbit/s. A 155 Mbit/s, a PTP link might need a 56 MHz channel to be used, but the restriction of the use of the spectrum to the direct line between the two link end-points (achieved by the use of directional antennas) makes for the potential of signi cant re-use of the same spectrum for multiple other links in the same region. However, while some regulators permit the use of such high bit rate channels, others limit the maximum available channel bandwidth to around 28 MHz (typically equivalent to 34 Mbit/s, 45 Mbit/s or 52 Mbit/s). As well as being more spectrum-ef cient in the carriage of high bit rate trunk-type connections, point-to-point wireless technology is also typically more economic than pointto-multipoint technology for carrying such connections.
